Former Treasury Secretary Summers Resigns from AI Company's Directors
Former US treasury secretary Lawrence Summers is leaving the board at the artificial intelligence firm, just a week after a collection of electronic messages between him and late convicted sex offender the disgraced billionaire became public.
Summers remarked in an announcement that he was "appreciative for the opportunity to have served, enthusiastic about the potential of the company, and anticipate tracking their progress".
The former Harvard president, who previously headed the prestigious university, announced on recently that he would be withdrawing from public roles due to his association with the convicted sex offender.
Email Communications
The recently released communications demonstrated that the official communicated with the financier until the eve of the financier's 2019 detention for alleged human trafficking of underage individuals.
In another announcement, the artificial intelligence company said it understood his decision to resign.
"We appreciate his significant contributions and the perspective he offered to the governing body," the organization remarked.
Congressional Action
This announcement comes after both chambers of Congress agreed on this week to endorse a legislation that would mandate the federal prosecutors to release its files on Epstein.
The legislation will afterward move to the administration of the White House for endorsement. He has indicated he intends to approve the legislation, after modifying his position on the subject following pressure from his base.
Correspondence Findings
A group of financier-linked correspondence disclosed by the House Oversight Committee recently mentioned several well-known personalities in the financier's previous network, without implying any illegal behavior by those people.
The communications indicated that Summers and Epstein often met for meals, with Epstein often attempting to link the academic to notable world leaders.
Individual Statement
After the messages were released with the wider community, the former official said he took "full responsibility for my misguided choice to continue interacting with Jeffrey Epstein".
He continued that he hoped "to restore faith and mend bonds with the people most important to me".
Professional History
The economist served in high-level positions under two Democratic presidents; acting as Treasury chief under Bill Clinton, and as leader of the White House economic team under the former leader.
He presided over the university from the early 2000s and is still a professor there. When declaring his step-down from public commitments earlier on Monday, he indicated he would persist with his teaching commitments.
Additional Consequences
Following his announcement on earlier this week, the policy organization, a progressive think tank in Washington where Summers was a prominent member, announced that he was not affiliated with the group.
He entered the directorate of the technology firm, which develops ChatGPT, in last year - following a failed attempt to remove its top executive OpenAI's head.
