The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it deems “unjustified” visa bans issued by the US on five European individuals working on combating online hate and disinformation, an EU official stated.
European Leaders Decry US Move as ‘Intimidation’
Officials from Europe including the French president charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans targeted figures that were central to efforts to introduce legislation regulating American tech companies.
“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have led coordinated campaigns to coerce US companies to punish US perspectives they oppose,” stated the US secretary of state in a social media post. “This government will no longer tolerate such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”
Broad Criticism Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in criticizing the decision.
The restrictions were imposed this week on an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s digital governance law, as well as several anti-disinformation campaigners, including Germany and the United Kingdom.
