Bluefin Fish Fetches Unprecedented Sum of $3.2m at Tokyo New Year Sale
A massive Pacific bluefin tuna created waves at the Tokyo's Toyosu fish market this Monday, achieving a record-breaking bid of 510.3 million yen (3.2 million US dollars; £2.4m) during the venue's opening auction of the calendar year.
The top bid for the 243-kilogram fish came from the operator of a popular sushi restaurant group, which operates locations throughout Japan and abroad.
"An inaugural tuna signals a prosperous start," commented the entrepreneur, a regular participant at the traditional new year's auction.
Known as the Tuna King, this industry figure is renowned for submitting high bids for bluefin tuna at these auspicious year-opening auctions.
Auction Shock and Historic Precedent
Following the auction, the successful bidder informed journalists that he was "taken aback at the final price," noting, "I had thought we would be able to acquire it a little at a lower price, but the price escalated rapidly."
This latest purchase exceeds his previous historic purchases:
- He bid 56.5 million yen back in 2012.
- He spent 155 million yen the following year.
- In 2019, he won a tuna for 333.6 million yen (2.1 million dollars).
Despite once saying that he thought he "did too much," he has now proceeded to surpass his personal record another time.
An Annual Spectacle of Exorbitant Bids
The first auction at the Toyosu fish market is notoriously characterized by exorbitant prices. The previous year, the initial tuna was bought for 207 million yen by a separate culinary group, which announced the fish would be served at its restaurants across Japan.
The frenetic atmosphere at the fish market during these early morning auctions has evolved into a popular tourist attraction in Tokyo. Monday's auction, which commenced around 05:00 local time, was no exception.
From Auction to Plate
The multi-million-dollar tuna was shortly thereafter prepared for customers at the bidder's sushi restaurants soon after the auction ended.
"I believe like I've started the year in a auspicious way after consuming something so auspicious as the year begins," remarked one satisfied diner.
